I really did like the book

I wanted to write a review of Leif Enger’s new book, “So Brave, Young and Handsome,” but I’m having a hard time doing that. Enger wrote my favorite book, “Peace Like a River,” and I can’t seem to write about “So Brave” without comparing it to its predecessor.

“So Brave, Young and Handsome” is sort of a middle-age coming-of-age story about an author who’s stuck on his second book. It’s an adventure story, but it’s also about family and finding yourself and holding onto your identity. Enger is capable of writing with an understated, elegant lyricism, and that’s evident fairly frequently in his second novel. It was there on most every page of “Peace Like a River,” though, which is why I didn’t enjoy “So Brave” quite as much.

And we're off

Would you look at that? It’s November. Pete and I are still trying to get over being sick, and we have a first birthday party to plan for next Saturday. And a few weeks after that? Thanksgiving. At our house. Yowzers.

All of that adds up to one thing: No NaNoWriMo for me. Maybe I’ll take next November off and make it happen.

I think I’m going to make a go at National Blog Posting Month, though. Here’s to a month of posting more nonsense than usual!

Happy Halloween

Trick or treatAfter four days of battling a horrible stomach virus, we were all well enough to take to the streets tonight for a little trick-or-treating. It was Poppy’s first trick-or-treat experience. Conveniently enough, it’s also the first year she’s been interested in candy. She had a blast, proclaiming, “This candy smells delicious!” after every stop.

Pete wasn’t quite as enthusiastic about the outing. He sat in his stroller and sucked his thumb, and when we got home, he went right to bed. He was the cutest little Roo anyway.
