Friday links! Chicken challenges, soggy slides and more politics

  • Have you seen the ad where the family can’t put together a meal at the grocery store for $10? So they go to KFC? An Iowa City chef took it as a challenge and wrote about it at Grist.
  • The last time we ran into a rainy-day slide problem, Poppy dried it off with her bottom. This is a better plan.
  • Newsweek has a fascinating behind-the-scenes series on the presidential campaign.
  • November is for noodle talk

Only the 6th of November, and I’m already struggling to come up with something to say. If it weren’t for NaBloPoMo, I wouldn’t be sharing this with you. But in the name of posting every day, I’ll tell you that tonight we discovered that I don’t like soba noodles. Pete, however, loves them.

I’ve been disappointed with our meals this week. I’m not sure if they’ve really been bad or if I just can’t taste anything.

It’s a theme week at Works for Me Wednesday! Shannon wants to know what toys you’ve found that are worth buying. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Books. Poppy loves to read, and Pete has recently started picking up his board books and babbling his way through them. We’ve found a great used-books shop that has a well-stocked childrens section.
  • Leapfrog Tag. This one fits right in with Poppy’s love of reading.
  • Blocks. We have a set of wooden blocks that belonged to Rockford’s dad when he was a little guy. The kids love playing with them, and I love that they aren’t plastic.
  • Cookware. Poppy loves to help me in the kitchen. If we had room for it, I’d love to have a little kitchen set for the kids to “practice” their culinary skills in. As it is, though, she and Pete have plenty of fun playing with the pots and pans they pull out of the cupboard.
