My little literalist

“I love to paint!”

Poppy told me that over and over again as she crafted her latest work: “Daddy and Some Green Stuff.”

The narrative as she applied the “Daddy” portion of the painting (that big, dark splotch on the left): “Poppy loves her daddy. He’s such a good daddy.”

Thankfully, she didn’t paint her face green this time. She did, however, just come out of the bathroom saying, “That’s OK! It’s just water!”

Oh dear.

Christmas Tour

I’ve always loved Christmas, but I’ve been feeling very Grinchly this year. I think I’ve narrowed the reasons down to three:

  1. It’s been far too warm here for any Christmas spirit. At least, it was too warm until this weekend. Now it’s delightfully and bitterly cold.
  2. Most of our Christmas stuff is in storage at my Dad’s house. (Long story.)
  3. I’ve done most of my Christmas shopping online. Thus, nary a shopkeeper has wished me a Merry Christmas.

We tried to boost the holiday spirits last night with a trip to see the county-sponsored Christmas lights at a local park. But guess what! They ended the festivities on Saturday. Christmas spirit? Not so boosted.

So I was delighted today to find that BooMama is hosting a holiday tour of homes today. It brings together two of my favorite things: Christmas decor and peeking inside admiring other people’s homes.

In the interest of fairness, I’ll give you a peek into our home, too! Here it is, in all its festive glory.

Soup hits the spot

Menu Plan Monday logo

With the Christmas shopping mostly finished and Rockford’s payday at the end of the week, we’re offering a budget-friendly bunch of meals today. This menu plan was built from what we have on hand; this may be the first time I’ve managed to do that! We just started having wintry weather this weekend, so it was the perfect time to add some soup to the meal list, too.

Monday: Creamy potato soup
This recipe from Cook’s Illustrated is terrifically creamy and satisfying on a cold day.

Tuesday: Chicken enchiladas
Although it was a little mild for my taste, we enjoyed this recipe (from “Don’t Panic: Dinner’s in the Freezer“) the first time around. The foil and plastic wrap came off very easily, and the dish is thawing in the refrigerator now. It should make for a very simple dinner tomorrow night!

Wednesday: Tomato soup and grilled cheese
I’ve considered trying to snazz this duo up a bit by making cheesy croutons to top the soup. This time, though, I’ll probably stick with the sandwiches.

Thursday: Bean nachos

Friday: Pizza
Does anyone have a great, unusual pizza-topping combination they’d like to share? We’re in a pepperoni-and-pineapple rut.
