Revisiting his youth

“You won’t believe my old lady. She lets me listen to Zeppelin and play video games.” — Rockford

Rockford hooked up his record player and the Wii at the new apartment this afternoon. As I type this, my dear husband is listening to “Stairway to Heaven” and playing Metroid.

That saying about the way to a man’s heart being through his stomach? Not entirely accurate with my fella. The path to Rockford’s heart tunnels goes directly through the nerdery.

  • Over and Over, Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Why yes, iPod, it does feel like we’re just moving over and over and over again. Thank you for your input.
  • Rosalie, Alejandra Escovedo.
  • Astro, The White Stripe.
  • This Place is a Prison, Postal Service. We have been out in the sticks, iPod, but that’s a little extreme. This place is more like a swanky rehab facility. We’ve been able to come and go as we pleased.

Scene: A small bedroom, recently emptied of its contents. Including one toddler’s crib. Enter exuberant toddler. Toddler stops short, looks around the room in bewilderment.

    Poppy: Uh-oh.

Toddler reaches down to pat carpet divots where the crib used to be.

    P: Uh-oh.

Mommy, trying to sound chipper and comforting: Your bed is getting ready to move to our new house!

Toddler resumes playing. Crib is all but forgotten.
