Grace in Small Things: 4, 5 and 6 of 365

Day 4

  • The kids’ glee over their free cookies at the grocery store.
  • Finding a great sale on batteries.
  • Rockford putting my new battery organizer on the wall.
  • Day 5

  • The joyful look on Petey’s face when he glances back to see Poppy chasing him.
  • The kids playing so well together.
  • The Swedish meatballs being a success.
  • Day 6

  • Getting up early enough to have breakfast with Rockford.
  • Poppy, as we put Pete down for his nap: “Goodnight, Grummy-Oscar. I hope you sleep well in your trash can.”
  • Helping Poppy write a story about Pooh and his pals. Title: “Pooh and Tigger and Roo are playing.”
  • A new season of “Biggest Loser.” (Yes, I’m serious.)
  • Grace & blog maintenance

I haven’t ditched the gratitude-list effort. I’m trying to find a way to include the list here without allowing it to take over the blog. What I’d like to do is list it in the sidebar, but I’d like to do that without having to change the sidebar code every day. Which means I need to find a way to make those specific posts show up over there rather than over here. I’ve found a few ways that are supposed to work, but for whatever reason they don’t work here. If I can’t figure out how to do it, I’ll be doing a once-a-week Grace in Small Things post.

I've been thinking about Swedish meatballs all weekend

Menu Plan Monday logoI picked up a copy of Cook’s Illustrated over the weekend, and we’re going to be trying a few recipes from it this week. I’ve been thinking about getting a subscription, but the amount of heavy cream they use is holding me back.

    Monday: Swedish Meatballs.
You can thank Ikea for my love of Swedish meatballs. I’ve never tried to make them at home before, but the first thing I thought when I tried the cranberry sauce I made at Thanksgiving was, “Oh, this would be great on Swedish meatballs!” I had a big container of the cranberries in the freezer, so it felt like providence when the meatballs were in Cook’s Illustrated this month.

    Tuesday: Butternut Squash Ravioli

    Wednesday: Tandoori Chicken
The recipe is only available to Cook’s Illustrated subscribers, but they’re offering a free trial of their online subscription. If you sign up for it, you have access to all of their online content.

    Thursday: BBQ chicken sandwiches
I’m hoping to turn Wednesday’s tandoori into Thursday’s BBQ. We’ll see how that works.

    Friday: Pizza
