Chomp it up.

A scrambled, crabby mashup

I have a habit (good or bad — you be the judge) of browsing through people’s cookbooks when I visit. Picking up Amy’s copy of Rachael Ray’s 365 days cookbook from her bookshelf led us to a brilliant idea: We’d randomly choose one recipe from the book every week, cook it and blog the results. It would be a project! It would get us a book deal! And a movie, starring Alyson Hannigan as Amy and Scarlett Johansson as me! (And Rockford as himself, because he has a ScarJo crush!)

(To be fair to Amy, I just came up with the movie deal part. She’s less delusional than some people.)

Anyway, it was an awesome plan. But then Amy made the first recipe — page 141, a Crab Tortilla — and wasn’t entirely impressed. So we changed the rules a bit.

Our project (which I’m calling “Recipe Roulette” unless Amy tells me otherwise) isn’t going to be Rachael Ray-centered. We’ll take turns picking a recipe — sometimes it’ll be a random pick, sometimes calculated — and we’ll post about it every Monday. That’s pretty much the extent of the ground rules.

Oh, and about that Crab Tortilla.

A downer of a baking story, such as it is.

The Daring BakersThe July Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Nicole at Sweet Tooth. She chose Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Cookies and Milan Cookies from pastry chef Gale Gand of the Food Network.

I wanted to share a nice, long post all about the Milan Cookies (Milanos! Yum!) that my friend Amy and I made for the Daring Bakers this month. But AT&T is so pathetically unreliable that I have no Internet access at home, so I’m typing this at the library. And there are three kids next to me (not mine) arguing about what video they’re going to rent, and it’s just not working.

So I’ll tell you this: The cookies were delicious even though they were a bit underbaked and cakey rather than crunchy and oh, good night kids just agree on a dad-gum DVD and git.

Sticking to the standards

Menu Plan Monday logoIt’s been a good long while since I participated in Menu Plan Monday. Not that we haven’t been eating, mind you. I don’t know what happened to June, but we’ve been away from home for most of July and I just started cooking and planning again last week. And I did it again this week! You won’t find anything new on the menu; we’re still at my dad’s house, and I wanted to try to make things I thought he might like.

Monday: Peanut butter chicken
Poppy loved this the last time we had it. But it’s been awhile since then. So cross your fingers for me.

Tuesday: Sloppy Joes

Wednesday: Fish stick po’ boys

Thursday: Maple-Dijon chicken

Friday: Sizzling rice soup
Friday is my brother’s birthday. If he were here, I’d take him out for a bowl of our favorite soup. He isn’t here, though, so I’m taking myself out for soup in his honor.
