Notes from the waiting room

Rockford is having his gallbladder removed today, and he had to check in at 5:30 this morning. It was 18 degrees when we left the house, and there was a light dusting of snow on the ground.

Rockford and I watched the local morning news while we were in the pre-op room. They read comments from Facebook and a BuzzFeed post from July. On air. Hard-hitting news.

It’s 7:30 now, and they just wheeled him back to the operating room. I’m in the waiting room, camped out next to an outlet. Unfortunately, I’m also very close to the very loud TV. Lots of CNN for me this morning.

7:41am. There’s a group of about six people here for the same patient. Most of them are talking about Ferguson — they’re concerned — but one of them is talking on her phone and laughing riotously.

7:44am. She’s on a new phone call now. More laughter.

7:53am. Rockford’s surgeon has started the procedure. The nurse called from the OR to tell me. Is that weird?

Things I learned between 7:56 and 8:03am

  • The costume designer for “Mad Men” was also the costume designer for “The Adventures of Pete and Pete.” Also, Ryan Gosling could have been a Backstreet Boy. (19 Mind-Blowing Facts Every 90s Kid Would Want to Know)
  • What TV Paranormal Crime-Solving Team Do You Belong On? I belong with the Winchesters, obviously.
  • The laughing phone lady forgot to take her pills this morning.
  • 8:06am. I’d like to add this Luke’s Diner sweatshirt to my sweatshirt collection.

8:08am. 18 of these 21 pictures guaranteed to make you laugh every time actually did make me laugh.

8:09am. This time would be better used reading “John Adams” than reading dumb stuff on BuzzFeed.

8:12am. That girl over there decided not to go out for basketball this year.

8:13am. OK, I’m going to go read a book now. Really.

8:24am. It’s hard to concentrate on “John Adams” with the nerves and the CNN and the laughing family in here with me. Speaking of CNN: How about we don’t show Viagra commercials at 8:24 in the morning?

8:28am. I think I may have fallen asleep for a minute there.

8:35am. A new large family has joined us in the waiting room. One of them looks like my cousin Tim and has a creepy laugh. I’m surprised that there’s so much laughter in a hospital waiting room. It’s been a right jolly spot this morning.

8:37am. The girl who isn’t playing basketball has Beefaroni and a burrito in her backpack.

8:47am. Rockford is out of surgery and in recovery, where he’ll be for about an hour. A new family has joined us. They turned down the TV. I like their show of initiative.

    A conversation with the surgeon
He: “Problems caused by the gallbladder stop immediately when the gallbladder is removed, so if he’s still having pain …”
Me: “You’ll put the gallbladder back in?”
    He:
    Kanye is not amused

    A post-surgery menu plan

Rockford is saying goodbye to his gallbladder early tomorrow morning. He’s a little bit concerned that it’ll forever affect his ability to eat fatty and fried foods, so he spent the weekend eating cheeseburgers, pizza and fried chicken just in case. We’ve stocked up on brothy soups for him, but I’ve also planned a rather bland menu for the week just in case he’s up for something more than soup.

    Monday: ??
We have a good deal of running around to do this evening, so I’m guessing we’ll be eating out.

    Tuesday: Lucky Charms?
I’m not sure whether or not Rockford will want to eat anything, and I’m happy eating cereal for dinner. The kids might demand more, though. We’ll see.

    Wednesday: Baked chicken and rice
    I bought Shake and Bake.

    Thursday: Breakfast for dinner
Hopefully egg white omelets are an acceptable thing for someone without a gallbladder, because that’s what we’re having.

    Friday: Poppyseed chicken casserole
    It’s innocuous and delicious!

I’m linking this up with OrgJunkie.com’s weekly Menu Plan Monday thing.

Three posts that never saw the light of day

My computer has been on its last legs for awhile. On Friday I tried to update the operating system, and I think I may have pushed it over the edge altogether. I can’t access any of my photos now, and it takes a good 30 seconds for the text I’ve typed to show up on the screen. I’m going to take the computer over to the fix-it shop sometime this week to see if they can retrieve my pictures and then I’m going to try to blog using the iPad for awhile. And then maybe someday I’ll get a new laptop.

Anyway, yesterday Vikki at Up Popped a Fox wrote about the stuff languishing in her Drafts folder. That sounded like a fine way to spend a day of NaBloPoMo, so I’m copying her today. Desperate copying of ideas is the true spirit of NaBloPoMo, after all.

So here are a few gems from my Drafts folder:

Here I am not blogging on my blog
Bloggity bloggy, I am not blogging.
    That’s the entire file.

My Blissdom 2013 notebook: “Uninterrupted Thought” with Megan Jordan
I have a problem, and it is technology.
There’s more of this one. It’s nearly a fully formed post, and I’m not sure why I never posted it.

I made a pretty sweet, Pinterest-able graphic with a cringe-worthy BuzzFeed-esque title, but I never actually wrote the thing.

On a positive note, this exercise may actually lead to two posts later this month.
