Greenin' up the diapers

naturebabycare.jpgIn our ongoing effort to “green” up our household, I decided to give a few brands of eco-friendly diapers a try. I ordered three brands from Diapers.com: Nature Babycare, Seventh Generation and TenderCare.

The first package I opened was from Nature Babycare. Here’s what they say about their product:

Nature babycare is the result of many years of intense work and development. It is the first ECO-friendly high-performance diaper, based on new green technology, protected by a Swedish patent. The diaper is soft, thin, comfortable and with perfect sizing. Its performance is as good as the best ”traditional” diapers. It has an exclusive 100% chlorine free absorbent material and the material against the baby’s skin is based on corn instead of plastic like traditional diapers, 100% compostable, breathable and extremely kind for the baby. The packaging is 100 % compostable and based on corn.

The diapers feel sturdy and nice to the touch — much more papery than our usual. This is our first experience with “green” diapers, so I’m not sure whether or not thickness is generally an issue. The Nature Babycare diapers are a bit thicker than Pampers, but not so much that they seem to be uncomfortable for Pete.

We’ve had a problem with leaks with these diapers, but I suspect that’s because of the sizing. Despite their claims of “perfect sizing,” Nature Babycare diapers seem to run small. I bought the 12- to 18-pound size, and they’re very snug on our 15-pound boy. I’m not crazy about the closure tabs, either. I like to wrap the dirty diapers up into a little bundle to throw them away, and the tabs on these don’t stick well enough to do that successfully.

It's party time. Excellent.

mosaic438486.jpg5 Minutes for Mom is hosting their “Ultimate Blog Party” this week. Welcome to my corner of the festivities!

Have a seat! Can I get you anything? Some marshmallows? Lemon meringue ice cream pie? Chocolate cake? Ice cream?
Ultimate Blog Party 2008A grizzly bear? (Hey, who let him in here?)

No?

Alright then. Have you met my husband? His alias is Rockford, and he’s a mighty sweet guy. And here are the kids, Poppy — our resident comedienne — and Pete. He’s new to the team, but he’s fitting in well so far.

There are all sorts of door prizes to be had at the Ultimate Blog Party, by the way. I’d love to win a rocking horse for Pete & Poppy or some art for someone’s wall or a customized workout plan from Go Workout Mom. We’ll be giving away some more cookies sometime this week, so make sure to stop by again to toss your name into the hat.

Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to look around, and help yourself to whatever’s in the fridge. And before you go, please leave a comment! Tell me a little about yourself! Thanks!

A good reason to eschew vegetarianism

I’ve had bacon on the brain ever since I saw the bacon cups at NotMartha.com. Today she revealed the purpose of the cups: A bacon party. The photos had me drooling.

In other bacon news, here are a few things I’d like to try:

  • Bacon Salt. Because everything should taste like bacon. The founders have a nice background story that involves “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” Seriously.
  • Mo’s Bacon Bars. A few years ago I thought it would be a good idea to add bacon to chocolate chip cookies. Rockford squashed that idea. (Fair enough. I squashed his cereal bar idea, which was the most lucrative of the two.) Vosges’ bacony bar has me thinking about Bacon Chocolate Cookies again, though.
  • Powered by Pork.” This Zingerman’s gift box contains “almost 3 lbs of our favorite bacons, including Wisconsin Applewood, Arkansas Long Pepper, Kentucky Dry-Cured and Edward’s from Virginia.”

    Gee whiz, I’m hungry.

It seems I infuriated Chris with my “American Idol” post. So in the spirit of apology, this post is dedicated to you, my bacon-loving, expat pal.
