The movies we watched in 2013

  1. Looper” (01/02/13)

I like the premise — that time travel is around, but it’s too complicated to bother thinking very deeply about — and I really wanted to like the movie. But the ending gave me a great feeling of dissatisfaction. I wanted to know And Then What Happened? as the credits rolled, and I never love movies that end that way. I also didn’t like what they did to JGL to make him look like Bruce Willis.
  2. Lawless (01/03/13)

I thought this was going to be Lucy Lawless’s biography, but it turns out it’s about when Bain,* the Transformers kid and Hank were moonshiners in Virginia. I googled “how to make moonshine” while we were watching the movie, and it sounds really gross.

“Lawless” contained too many extremely gross killings and too many dumb characters for my taste. I did not care for it.

*Turns out that the Bain voice wasn’t just a weird affectation for the Batman movie. That guy really sounds like that. Or maybe that’s just his Tough Guy Voice. Either way, I find it distracting.

  3. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (01/04/13)

I give it a solid meh.
  4. Pitch Perfect (01/10/13)

I wanted to love this, but I just liked it.
  5. Drive (01/11/13)

We’d seen this one before. It’s far too violent for my taste, but Ryan Gosling is in it. I don’t think I’ll watch it again, though, because I had a very hard time sleeping afterward.
  6. End of Watch (01/30/13)

I thought this was going to be another movie about stupid people making stupid mistakes, but then they went and made the characters pretty much fully formed human beings and I got attached to them. And I feel like I can’t say much more than that without ruining the movie for you. I think my brother would like this one.
  7. “Zero Dark Thirty” (02/02/13)

  8. “Django Unchained” (02/02/13)

  9. “Silver Linings Playbook” (02/02/13)

  10. “Lincoln” (02/02/13)
