On Wednesday I vacuumed all the things

If you had peeked into my house yesterday at 10:30 a.m., you would’ve found me sitting on the couch eating Sun Chips and reading other people’s Week in My Life posts while the kids watched a show downstairs.

And then I got Sun Chips salt in my eye. It was that sort of morning.

Sometimes I wonder if maybe the kids convene secret, middle-of-the-night meetings to decide how the next day is going to go. Sometimes they decide it’ll be perfectly lovely day, like Tuesday was. Other days Poppy might opt to be delightful while Pete is a pill, or vice versa.

They must’ve decided to make yesterday morning a doozy. Little cads.

When homeschooling is like herding cats

Poppy distracted Pete, then Pete distracted Poppy, then Poppy hit Pete, then Pete cried, then Poppy had a tantrum, then I dragged Poppy to her room, then Poppy’s tantrum increased ten-fold.

And then somehow all of the schoolwork was done and there I was on the couch with my Sun Chips.

It wasn’t our finest morning.

Postmeridian

Rockford came home and hung out with Pete yesterday during Poppy’s first ballet class of the day. I took advantage of that rare 45 minutes of alone time by taking a walk, and it turned my mood around entirely.

Poppy & friends at the barre.
A gentleman I encountered on my walk.

After ballet, Poppy and Pete played outside while I cleaned up the house and then raked leaves. There’s only one tree in our back yard, but it’s a big one. So there’s a lot of leaf-raking for us this time of year. We came inside for a snack, after which the kids watched a little more TV and JJ and I had our daily precious moment.

He sits there while I write. He’s my furry little editor.

Then we loaded back into the car for Poppy’s second ballet class, which is technically a rehearsal for “The Nutcracker.” We left about half an hour earlier than we actually needed to — for some reason I can’t ever seem to remember when rehearsal actually starts — so we swung by the grocery store to pick up a few things beforehand. Pete and I dropped our little dancer off and headed back home, where we did yet more cleaning. (Well, I did more cleaning. Pete mostly played.)

Today’s chores, all of which I actually did

  • Vacuum.
  • Laundry.
  • Clean the kids’ bathroom.
  • Clean the basement.
  • Grocery store.

    Late in the evening

Pete and I had just started a game of Chinese checkers before Rockford and Poppy got home. Poppy joined our game, but the kids abandoned it about halfway through to play outside again, which was fine since I needed to get dinner started. We had a really pleasant dinner. There wasn’t a single bit of whining, and Poppy even managed to choke down three whole peas!

Pete went to bed peacefully, and Poppy wrote a book report on “Ramona the Pest” before she, too, went to sleep with no trouble. They’ve always been pretty good about bedtime, a trait for which I am extremely grateful.

After the kids went to bed Rockford and I retired to the drawing room to watch the last episode of season one of “Homeland.” Showtime has the first episode of season two available online, but after that we’ll just have to wait for season two on DVD. This is why it’s a good idea to wait a few seasons to start watching a show on a channel you don’t get.

    1. Yikes, I love Sun Chips but now they sound like they can be quite hazardous! Lol. And hooray for accomplishing all those chores. I always feel good when I get it all done.
