Friday links! The smack talk goes global

  • Rockford and our expat friend Chris have a long-standing rivalry rooted in football. Chris graduated from the University of Georgia, and Rockford lived in Alabama for the first three years of his life, which he seems to think obligates him to be a ‘Bama fan. This weekend, the teams meet up in Athens. Chris asked Rockford to commemorate the event with a little smack talk over on his Web site: Your Cadillac Has Got a Wheel in the Ditch at A Free Man.
  • There was a time when I would have voted for John McCain for president. Even though he seems to have changed quite a bit since then, I was withholding judgment on him this time around until he picked his VP. Because of the “one heartbeat away from the presidency” thing, the VP pick is always important, but it seemed a little more so with McCain because of his age. Have you seen anything from Sarah Palin’s interview with Katie Couric? It continues to boggle my mind that the McCain camp thought this was a good idea.
  • Magnetic puzzles at Parent Hacks! Brilliant!
  • I tried to avoid Facebook for quite a long time, but once I joined up I found that, like Kate, “I’m not cool enough to be too cool for Facebook.” She expands on the social site’s allure in kate is watching you.
  • Another Kate is feeling a bit Overwhelmed right now. Her family left Galveston ahead of Hurricane Ike, and then she had a baby. They can’t go home yet because their house took in about 3 feet of water. Pop over there and lend some moral support.
  • And finally, I love these plates.
  • At least it's a well-organized addiction

I spend far too much time on the Internet. It’s a problem, but it does have a bright side: I’ve found a lot of cool surfing “tools” over the past few years. Here are three of my favorites.

  • Google Reader is an essential if you read a lot of blogs. Reader gathers up every RSS feed that you subscribe to and puts them all on one page. You can organize the feeds by category; a few of my categories are “food,” “craft” and “shopping,” for example. When a new item is posted, Reader updates the page. It’s a far more efficient way of skimming through your daily reads than clicking over to each blog. Which is what I did before I found my precious Reader. Google Reader also offers sites it thinks you might enjoy, based on your other subscriptions. It’s a neat feature, but Google? I didn’t need anything else to fuel my Internet addiction. Thanks.
  • Delicious is a spectacular tool for organizing your bookmarks. I occasionally still use my browser to bookmark sites. Because Delicious is web-based, though, it can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection. That makes it handy, but it’s the site’s tagging functions that make it delightful. You add tags to each bookmark you enter, and it creates sort of an index of your bookmarks. My most-used tags are “to_try” and “recipes.” The “to_try” category does contain quite a few recipes, but it also holds crafts and art projects and other such things.
  • Wists is where I keep my online wish list (in the sidebar), but it’s also how I keep track of gift ideas. When I see an item I’d like to add to my Wists page, I click a little button on my browser. It whisks me over to Wists, where I tag the item and choose the image I’d like to represent it. Wists also offers a “do not share” option, which is essential if you’re using it as a gifting list.

What are your favorite online tools?

  • Friday links!

  • One of the first things that drew me to McSweeneys were the Reviews of New Food. Scroll down for the review of Dwight Yoakam’s Chicken Fries.
  • Simple Mom has a great list of Twaddle-Fre Books for Preschoolers. After reading this, I pulled out our copy of “The World of Pooh” and started reading it to the kids while the played.
  • I always get a kick out of it when the Fug Girls provide “transcripts” for the photos they feature. The JLo chronicles are some of my favorites.
  • Carol at A Second Cup made me think (and scared me silly) in Vision for the Future.
  • The Inhabitots make really cool silhouette T-shirt.
  • Linda at All & Sundry shares a few things she’s learned about diet and fitness. She’s whipped herself into incredible shape over the last few years, so I’m going to take what she has to say about this subject pretty seriously. One thing in particular really struck me: “It feels amazing to treat your body like a partner instead of an enemy.
  • The daughter of Mark Rothko discusses the art cheats who betrayed her father. It’s a sad story.
  • Martha Stewart wants to see your blog! She’s having a contest. The prize? A review of your blog! Kind of an odd prize, but it’s sort of neat anyway.
