Dental safari

Works for Me Wednesday logo

It started with elephants. Tiny elephants dashing across her little teeth. Then there were the giraffes and the wildebeests and the gnus. I’d imagine we’ll spot a monkey in there before too long.

That’s right. There’s a safari in my daughter’s mouth. And there’s only one way to get those pesky animals out of there: With a toothbrush.

For a brief and glorious period, having a shiny new toothbrush was incentive enough to get Poppy to brush her teeth. Once that was old, though, it turned into a great and terrible fight every morning. (She brushes her teeth at night, too. But bedtime is Daddy time. And Daddy doesn’t need gimmicks, apparently.)

I think I must’ve read about this trick somewhere else, and I’m so glad it came back to me one morning while Pi had her little hand pressed against her mouth. Because I was getting really tired of prying it away to brush her teeth. She’s been a more-than-willing tooth-brusher since that first morning that I said, “What about the elephants? How will we get the elephants off of your teeth?!” It’s a nice change. And I hope it keeps working for me for a good, long time.

"So you know what I am up aganst"

This is the first letter from Cornell, who I believe has left home to join the Army.

June 22 1942

Dearest dad,

I can’t write much as I am in a hurry to go to bed. I am O.K. and like it fine. I don’t know how long I am going to be here, so if you can any way get me a little money and send it down here I will send it back just as quick as I get my first pay day, that will be the first of August, so if you can get me as much as $10.00 it will come in mighty good. We have to buy a lot of things and pay for our laundry to. So you know what I am up aganst so do your best and I will be expecting to hear from you soon. Rush the money just as quick as you can.

Your son,
Cornell

If you’re reading this, dearest Dad? I could use $10, too. Rush it just as quick as you can.

Weekend wrapup. And a menu!

Menu Plan Monday logoHere are some things that happened this weekend:

  1. I finally started on Poppy’s baby book. She’s three and a half. It isn’t nearly as in-depth as it would’ve been if I’d started it, say, three years ago. Yay.
  2. Finances gave me a large, enduring headache. Boo.
  3. The guy at the discount grocery store couldn’t figure out how to use the register. So he gave us 20-something dollars worth of groceries for $10.73. That made the headache hurt a little less. Yay.
  4. We were home all weekend. Yay.
  5. And Rockford didn’t spend all that much time working. Yay.
  6. I rearranged the furniture in the living room. Well, I really did that last week. But I like it. So yay.

Because of the one gigantic and hideous blight on the weekend, we’re having yet another SuperCheapWhat’sInThePantry menu plan this week.

Monday: Pancakes & veggie sausages.
Poppy and Pete love Morningstar Farms’ veggie sausage links, so we usually have them on hand. And ever since I picked up a syrup dispenser a few months ago, I can’t stop making pancakes.

Tuesday: Butternut squash ravioli
I have nearly reached the end of my butternut squash ravioli tolerance, but Pi is still enjoying them and they’re made from a vegetable. So we’ll keep having them.

Wednesday: Spaghetti
Back-to-back pasta nights. Carboriffic.

Thursday: Fish sticks
There was a buy-one, get-one-free sale on giant bags of fish sticks this weekend. Suddenly, my freezer is awash in fish sticks.
